Über Satelliten- oder Telekommunikation wird eine Daten- beziehungsweise eine Gesprächsverbindung zwischen zwei oder mehr Empfängern hergestellt.
Bei der Satelliten-Kommunikation wird die Verbindung über einen Satelliten im Weltraum aufgebaut - der als Spiegel dient - und jeweils von einer Bodenstation auf der Erde weitergeleitet an die Empfänger. Satellitenkommunikation eignet sich besonders für entlegene Gebiete, wobei die Verbindungskosten hoch sind.
Die Telekommunikation erfolgt über Basisstationen, zum Beispiel als Funkmasten, die eine vergleichsweise engmaschige Infrastruktur erforderlich machen. Sie ist für die Verbraucher günstiger als die Satellitenkommunikation.
